The Greater Patagonian Trail Section 17H, Liquine, 15/1 2026
An Introduction to the Greater Patagonian Trail (GPT) can be found HERE.
15 January — Thursday
I’m apparently the only one who stayed the night camping. All the other people that were bathing with me yesterday are gone. I’m all alone at the camp, even the gates are closed requiring me to make a morning climb.
I will try to walk using my shoes normally today so compeed bandage on hoping that will work well enough.
The first part of section 17H runs on some dirt roads, before leading to, of which I was unaware, a famous lake, Laguna Ankacoique. What makes Laguna Ankacoique famous is that it is shaped like a heart. That is however very hard to experience without an aerial view.

The trail going to the lake trail is well maintained and costs 3000 CLP to access. From the lake I continue hiking to Puerto Fuy. The map said there was supposed to be a lot of road walking, however, the road is abandoned and has mostly become a trail to my pleasant surprise.

After about 20 kilometers of walking, I have had it with my Achilles pain. The compeed is not working. It is like the left shoe has been purposefully built to cut right into my Achilles. I can see that the blood is starting to amass under the compeed bandage. Time to solve this problem properly once and for all. I should have done this long ago.

Puerto Fuy is another tourist town. As the name suggests it is a port town with a ferry that takes passengers and cars across the mighty lake Pirihuecio, a journey of about 26 kilometers. There are plenty of restaurants but only one small supermarket — I buy some eggs and use up the remaining of my gas container. For dinner I decided to hit a restaurant. I’m craving some meat with veggies.

I see plenty of tents around the lake so I figured it probably was okay to pitch my tent here. Shortly after when I have bathed and are all set to go to bed, a man comes driving in his 4×4 pickup truck and says that this is private property and that it costs 15 000 CLP to camp here. A bit expensive in my opinion given that there are literally no facilities. For 15 000 CLP I could have gotten a private room at the hostel with a shared bathroom. Well, I’m not about to pack up and move now anyways, and my Spanish is not sufficient to argue. I just pay-up and go to bed. I kind of feel that I was given the foreign tax that I have heard about but not experienced until now, or at least I do not think so.

Tomorrow I will try to make my way to Osorno. It is slightly unclear how to get there, I have some different possibilities but regardless of route it requires a minimum of 2 bus changes. If I cannot make it to Osorno tomorrow, I will not have time for GPT19 and thus I will have to spend my remaining time doing something else of which I have no plan. Hopefully some good fortune tomorrow.
